# Weatherstack > Weatherstack is a real-time, historical, and forecast world weather REST API used by 75,000+ companies to power weather widgets and apps, trigger location-aware content and campaigns, plan logistics and field operations, and feed analytics with historical conditions. Locations can be looked up flexibly — by city or region name, ZIP code, latitude and longitude, or the requester's IP address — across millions of places worldwide, with an autocomplete endpoint for resolving user input. Current conditions return temperature, feels-like, weather code, description and icon, wind speed, degree and direction, pressure, precipitation, humidity, cloud cover, UV index, visibility, observation time, plus astronomy (sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset, moon phase and illumination) and air quality (CO, NO2, O3, SO2, PM2.5, PM10, US EPA and UK DEFRA indices). Historical data reaches back to 2008 with daily aggregates and hour-by-hour breakdowns; forecasts run 7 to 14 days ahead with hourly detail and probability fields for rain, snow, fog, thunder and more. A separate marine and sailing dataset adds tide times and heights, swell height, direction and period, significant wave height, and water temperature. Responses are lightweight JSON in any of 40 languages, secured over 256-bit HTTPS, on infrastructure handling billions of requests per day with an average uptime near 99.9%. Weatherstack is part of the APILayer suite (one account, one API key, one dashboard across the APILayer product family). A free API key is available at https://weatherstack.com/signup/free — the Free Plan includes 100 calls per month with real-time current weather and HTTPS, restricted to non-commercial use and without support. Paid plans unlock data sets in stages: Standard ($9.99/month, 50,000 calls, adds commercial use, standard support, location search and autocomplete, astronomy data, hour-by-hour data, full historical data back to 2008, and the marine API), Professional ($49.99/month, 300,000 calls, adds 7-day forecasts, 40 languages, and bulk queries), and Business ($99.99/month, 1,000,000 calls, extends forecasts to 14 days), with volume-based Enterprise pricing and up to 15% off on annual billing. Note that forecast, historical, marine, multi-language and bulk access are gated by plan, so the Free tier returns current conditions only. To call the API, append your access_key as a query parameter. The base URL is api.weatherstack.com. A single lookup is one HTTP GET request: api.weatherstack.com/current?access_key=YOUR_KEY&query=New+York. The endpoints are Current (/current), Historical (/historical, with historical_date or a date range), Forecast (/forecast, with forecast_days), Marine (/marine), Autocomplete (/autocomplete for location search), and a bulk mode that accepts several semicolon-separated locations in one call on supporting plans. Optional parameters set the unit system (m for metric, s for scientific, f for Fahrenheit), the response language, and hourly interval. Billing note: API errors are not counted against quota, and usage notifications are sent at 75%, 90%, and 100% of the monthly allowance. ## Getting Started - [Weatherstack Homepage](https://weatherstack.com/): Real-time, historical and forecast world weather data API - [API Documentation](https://docs.apilayer.com/weatherstack/docs/api-documentation): Full reference — every endpoint, parameter, response object, error code, and code examples - [Free API Key Signup](https://weatherstack.com/signup/free): Create a free account with 100 monthly calls - [Login](https://weatherstack.com/login): Access your dashboard, API key, and usage statistics - [Pricing](https://weatherstack.com/pricing): Free and premium plan tiers with call volumes and data-set access ## Tools - [API Status](https://status.weatherstack.com): Public status page for API performance, uptime, and incidents - [Overage Billing Documentation](https://weatherstack.com/billing-overages-documentation): How per-call charges apply once a plan's monthly quota is reached ## Resources - [FAQs](https://weatherstack.com/faq): Common questions on data sources, refresh frequency, scalability, plans, and payment - [API Glossary](https://weatherstack.com/api-glossary): Definitions of common weather and API terms - [APILayer Blog](https://blog.apilayer.com/): Tutorials, use cases, and product updates ## Support - [Contact Us](https://weatherstack.com/contact): Sales and technical support - [Get a Quote](https://weatherstack.com/contact/quote): Custom and high-volume plan inquiries
